Enter the take-home pay you want and work back to the gross salary that gives it, for 2025/26 and 2026/27 (England, Wales & NI).
Start from the take-home you want and work back to the salary that gives it. Enter the yearly take-home, your tax code, any pension and any student loan. The calculator tries salaries until the take-home after income tax, employee National Insurance, pension and student loan matches your figure, then shows that salary for the year and the month.
For a monthly take-home, multiply it by 12 before you enter it.
On the 2026 to 2027 rates, with code 1257L and category letter A and before any pension or student loan, each extra £1 of salary between £12,570 and £50,270 pays 20% income tax and 8% employee National Insurance, so 72p reaches take-home. Between £50,270 and £100,000 it pays 40% and 2%, so 58p does. Between £100,000 and £125,140 the Personal Allowance goes down by £1 for every £2, which takes another 20p, so 38p does.
The tax year runs from 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027. With the standard Personal Allowance of £12,570, income tax is 0% up to £12,570, 20% from £12,571 to £50,270, 40% from £50,271 to £125,140 and 45% over £125,140. The allowance goes down by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income above £100,000, so it is zero at £125,140 or above.
Employee National Insurance on the standard category letter A is 8% on earnings between £242 and £967 a week, and 2% above that.
The salary is what the employee is paid. The employer's cost is on top: for most employees, UK employer's National Insurance is 15% of whatever they earn above £5,000 a year, and the employer pays it, not the employee. Employment Allowance may cancel out the employer's National Insurance altogether. For 2026 to 2027 it's £10,500. The employer cost tab on our salary calculators page adds it up.

No. It gives the salary the employee is paid. For most employees, the employer also pays 15% of whatever they earn above £5,000 a year, though Employment Allowance, £10,500 for 2026 to 2027, may cancel it out for an employer that can claim it.
